Glaciology - Radioactivity - Environment

The Laboratory of Glaciology and Environmental Geophysics (LGGE) is a mixed research unit managed by both the CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research) and the Université Joseph-Fourier (UJF, Grenoble I).

Within the CNRS, LGGE is primarily a part of the Sciences of the Universe department ( INSU/SDU), but also the Engineering Sciences department (SPI) for its work on ice. Within the university, LGGE is a part of the Observatory for Sciences of the Universe in Grenoble (OSUG). It makes extensive use of the technical support provided by Institut Polaire Français Paul-Emile Victor (IPEV) for operations in polar regions. LGGE hosts researchers from the French Research for Development Institute (IRD) working on tropical glaciers.

The objects of the International Glaciological Society enshrined in its constitution are to:

  • stimulate interest in and encourage research into the scientific and technical problems of snow and ice in all countries;
  • facilitate and increase the flow of glaciological ideas and information;
  • publish
  • sponsor lectures, field meetings and symposia.

The purpose of SPERA (South Pacific Environmental Radioactivity Association) is to provide a forum to encourage and facilitate communication among scientists in the field of environmental radioactivity.

The Journal of Environmental Radioactivity provides a coherent international forum for publication of original research or review papers on any aspect of the occurrence of radioactivity in natural systems. Relevant subject areas range from applications of environmental radionuclides as mechanistic or timescale tracers of natural processes to assessments of the radioecological or radiological effects of ambient radioactivity. The Journal of Environmental Radioactivity is affiliated to the International Union of Radioecology (IUR), a non-political and non-profit scientific organisation of professional radioecologists

The International Union of Radioecologists (IUR) is a non-political and non-profit scientific organisation for professional radioecologists. It aims first at being a forum of information exchange between the radioecologists. The environment, being a complex data urges at having also information exchanges with scientists, involved in environmental research and management of non-radioactive nature. The IUR seeks therefore to promote this information exchange.

The purpose of the French Society for Radiation Protection (SFRP) is to bring together all the professionals working to protect man and the environment from the dangers of radiation.
